The Hunt For An Insurance Provider
You might think it doesn’t really matter where you buy your insurance—that it’s a product that will be the same no matter where you purchase it. But choosing an insurance provider is an important decision, since the right provider can save you money, offer excellent service, and provide you with the right protection for your needs.

There are three sources for homeowner insurance. Captive agents sell coverage from only one company. Telephone representatives are similar, but you can only deal with them over the phone. Independent insurance agents and brokers represent multiple insurance companies and can pick from those policies to find you the best combination of price, policy, and service.
If you use one of the first two sources, do some research about the insurance company. Find out how long they’ve been in business and ask about their financial rating (you want a company who’s rated at B+ or higher.) If you choose to go through an independent agent, ask which companies the agent works with, and with which one he does the most business. Find out how he’s compensated, and ask how much ability he has to resolve a tough claim on your behalf, should that situation arise.
No matter how you go about it, make sure you get several quotes from different companies before making a decision about where to purchase your home insurance policy. Insurance companies are competitive, and a little legwork will help you find the best deal.
