St. Louis, Missouri Home Insurance

St. Louis – home to the Gateway Arch and – Floods? Earthquakes?

St. Louis is located in a high risk area for flooding – in fact, one of the nation’s worst natural disasters was the Great Flood of ’93. Homeowners in the St. Louis area should obtain flood insurance coverage in the event of flood damage. Be aware, however, that flood insurance needs to be purchased in addition to your home insurance policy. Typically homeowners insurance policies do not provide flood damage coverage.

Another threat to St. Louis are earthquakes – the strongest earthquake in the U.S. happened in Missouri along the New Madrid Fault System in the Mississippi River Valley. According to the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency, this fault system poses the highest earthquake risk in the mainland. Residents in this area should purchase earthquake coverage, although only about 57 percent along the fault have earthquake protection. Earthquake insurance can be purchased as an add-on to your general homeowners insurance policy for an additional premium.

When shopping for a home insurance policy, research your options to obtain the best rate and coverage, with additional attention to customer service and efficient claims processing. In the event you need to file a claim, it’s helpful to know that the company representatives will provide assistance and process your claim quickly.

Insurance experts recommend that you keep a thorough record of your personal belongings and the value of each item. This is helpful when determining the level of coverage you will need and provides a record of your possessions should anything be destroyed and need to be replaced
