North Carolina Home Insurance

For most people, the purchase of a home is the largest investment they will ever make. Protecting that investment is extremely important and the best way to keep your investment safe is to purchase adequate homeowners insurance. In North Carolina, that can mean protecting yourself from hurricanes, flood damage, and severe winter storms.

A common mistake many homeowners make when purchasing homeowners insurance – especially in hurricane prone states such as North Carolina - is not buying enough coverage. As a homeowner buying an insurance policy in North Carolina, you'll want to make sure that you check your insurance every year to be sure you have adequate coverage. One major step in determining what policy would be best to completely protect you and your home is to determine what it would cost to replace your house. Your insurance agent is a good place to begin to help you figure this out since most agents have charts that determine home replacement costs.

When you are requesting a rate quote, keep in mind that the three most common types of homeowners insurance coverage are HO-1, HO-2, and HO-3. HO-1 is the most basic form of homeowners insurance and has actually been discontinued in many states because of its lack of coverage. HO-2 coverage will protect you from everything HO-1 will, plus five more disasters, including damage from water or freezing (pipes/plumbing) which could be important during the freezing North Carolina winters. The most popular coverage is the HO-3 policy, which takes all the coverage of HO-2 and adds liability coverage for accidents that happen in your home to guests.

In addition to one of the above policies, homeowners in North Carolina buying homeowners insurance will most likely want to purchase additional flood damage and high wind insurance. Although it will most likely cause your premiums to increase, it can save you from financial ruin in the long run. Often times water damage that is caused by a broken pipe will be covered, while the more extensive damage caused by heavy rains will not.  Don't get caught in the middle of hurricane season without the proper coverage – request a rate quote today to make sure you are protected tomorrow.
