What Your Policy Doesn't Cover
No insurance policy covers absolutely everything. Read your policy carefully so you understand its limits. Standard exclusions on HO-3 insurance (the most popular type of home insurance policy) include:
- Flooding
- Earthquake
- Freezing of pipes in an unoccupied or under-construction building
- Freezing, thawing, pressure, or weight of water or ice to a fence, pavement, patio, swimming pool, or dock
- Theft from a building that's under construction
- Vandalism and malicious mischief if the building has been vacant for more than 30 days
- Wear and tear on the home including deterioration, insect and rodent infestation, settling, cracking, expansion of pavement, walls, or foundations
- Damage by pets
- Intentional damage
- War or nuclear accident
- Animals, birds, and fish
- Losses resulting from the failure to protect property after a loss

You can, however, purchase extra coverage to meet your needs. For example, flood and earthquake coverage are both available as separate policies. This type of coverage can be costly, but if you live in an area that is prone to earthquakes or flooding, it makes sense to purchase the insurance as a precaution.
As previously mentioned, you may need additional coverage (known as riders, floaters, or endorsements) to cover items of particular value. A personal liability umbrella policy is another add-on if you want to supplement the basic liability coverage that comes with your home insurance policy. Just remember to contact your agent if you have any questions about what’s covered under your policy, or what dollar limits exist. It’s far better to be safe than sorry.
