How To Apply

After you’ve determined what type of homeowner insurance coverage you need, and once you’ve done the research to decide what company you’d like to use, you’re ready to apply for a policy.

You can ask for a home insurance quote online, over the phone, or in an insurance agent’s office. If you’re only applying for renters insurance, the application is fairly simple. You will be asked what insurance coverage level you want, and you will have to answer some questions about the size of the building, its age, and its construction. If you are a homeowner, you’ll need to be prepared with more information, including:

  • Detailed property information
  • Estimated distance to the fire department and location of the nearest fire hydrant
  • Current and previous insurance policy information
  • Dates and details for any renovations and improvements you have made to the home
  • Approximate square footage of your home, not including garage, basement, or outlying properties
  • Prior loss information

Note: The insurance company will also have some basic expectations about your home, including the fact that it has been equipped with dead-bolt locks, smoke alarms, and fire extinguishers. Ask your insurance company for a full list of other assumptions.

Once you provide this information, the insurance company will give you a price quote for your policy. Be sure the policy provides the type of coverage you need for your home. If you purchase a policy, you will receive detailed documentation detailing your coverage. Again, read the fine print to be sure the policy is adequate for your needs. Contact your agent if you have any questions or if you need to add additional coverage, such as riders for your valuables.
